Project objectives
- To revive the industrial heritage for the development of tourism.
- Promote understanding of the values of industrial heritage and its importance for diversifying the tourism offer in the project regions.
- To create a cooperation network between the parties involved in the field of tourism and industrial heritage, as well as to establish cooperation with the European Industrial Heritage Networks.
- Develop industrial heritage sites into attractive tourist destinations that meet the needs of travelers.
- Promote industrial heritage tourism sites to foreign and local travelers.
Activities
- Establish cooperation between owners/managers of industrial heritage and tourism development planners to more effectively use industrial heritage resources to create a diverse tourism offer.
- Adopt good practices and experience in industrial heritage management and tourism use from International and European industrial heritage networks, making contacts and organizing experience exchange visits and training for tourism entrepreneurs.
- Improve objects of industrial heritage according to the interests and needs of travelers (development of attractive programs and excursions, creation of creative workshops, preparation of educational expositions, etc.). The project plans to improve 26 objects (9 former production plants, five mills, and former electricity production plants, three water towers, five objects connected with the old railway, four lighthouses, 12 objects in total in Latvia, and 14 in Estonia).
- Introduce marketing activities to attract local and foreign travelers of special and general interest - "Creating stories", Industrial heritage image brochure, organization of "Industrial heritage weekend" event, informative tours for incoming tourism agencies, participation in tourism exhibitions, and preparation of information for the Internet.
Results
- The inclusion of industrial heritage in the tourism environment has been promoted, thus diversifying the tourism offer in the regions of the project - Kurzeme, Vidzeme, the Riga region, and Southern and Western Estonia.
- Adopted good practices from International and European cooperation networks on preserving and effectively using industrial heritage in tourism – 1 experience exchange visit, five training events, and a Practical Guide.
- Twenty-six objects of industrial heritage have been improved and perfected (4 tourist objects in the Vidzeme planning region), making them attractive tourist objects.
- Five "thematic and attractive stories" have been developed (e.g., manufacturing plants, water mills, power stations, water towers, e.g., railway lines and railway stations, and lighthouses) to draw the attention of travelers and encourage them to visit industrial heritage sites.
- Marketing activities implemented.
