Revival of industrial heritage for tourism development (Industrial heritage)

  • revival of industrial heritage for tourism development industrial heritage

The rapid development of modern technologies has influenced the abandonment of many historical production plants and related infrastructures. Many European examples show that industrial heritage enterprises are getting a second lease of life in tourism, appreciated by visitors and experts, and even included in the UNESCO heritage list. The “Industrial Heritage” project will cover attractions of five different thematic groups, such as mills and hydroelectric power plants, old production sites, railway heritage, lighthouses, and water towers.

Together with other objects in Latvia and Estonia, four tourist objects from the Vidzeme Planning region – an old train from Gulbene to Alūksne, the mill of Ķoņi, the Līgatne paper mill village workers’ apartment, and the water tower in the village of Zilaiskalns will be improved within the project. The tourism offer will be supplemented with brand-new objects, and the infrastructure of already well-known objects will be enhanced. As a result, the preservation of evidence of industrial history in Vidzeme will be promoted.
