On February 4-5, 2025, Valmiera will host a key event of the Green4HEAT project—a partner meeting and an Interregional Workshop, bringing together experts and specialists from eight European countries. Organized by the Vidzeme Planning Region (VPR) in collaboration with Riga Technical University (RTU), the workshop will focus on identifying sustainable and innovative solutions for heating and cooling, with a particular emphasis on low-temperature heat networks.
The Interregional Workshop, scheduled for February 5, will aim to pinpoint specific solutions that reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency not only in Vidzeme but also across other European regions. The discussions will involve representatives from local governments, energy companies, policymakers, and academic institutions, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to achieving the project’s goals.
During the workshop, participants will gain deeper insights into best practices identified by partners in their countries and elsewhere in Europe. Successful examples of low-temperature heat networks implemented in Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Poland, and other nations will be presented, providing practical insights into solutions that reduce energy losses, promote the use of waste heat and geothermal energy, and enhance energy efficiency. Discussions will also explore how these technologies can be adapted and scaled to regions like Vidzeme and other partner territories.
RTU, as a leading academic and research institution in Latvia, will play a crucial role in the scientific aspects of the event. Experts from RTU’s Institute of Energy Systems and Environment will lead discussions on the fundamental principles of planning low-temperature heat networks, financing models, and innovative approaches to optimizing heat sources. They will also present dynamic modeling solutions that help accurately evaluate energy flows and their impact on sustainability.
The Green4HEAT project, funded under the Interreg Europe program, focuses on advancing sustainable heating and cooling systems across Europe. With a total budget of €1,885,058, including €179,314 allocated to Vidzeme Planning Region, the project aims to improve the energy efficiency of heating systems, increase the use of renewable energy sources, and promote the adoption of green technologies and innovations.
VPR’s participation in the project aligns closely with the objectives outlined in its regional development strategy, which emphasizes environmentally friendly solutions and sustainable territorial development. The project outcomes will serve as a valuable resource for regional planning, fostering modernization in the energy sector and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The results and conclusions of the Interregional Workshop will be highly significant, contributing to the refinement of VPR’s development and planning documents.
